This world is a dream, Kino Tsurayuki

あひしれりける人の身まかりければよめる

夢とこそ
いふべかりけれ
世の中に
うつつあるものと
思ひけるかな

紀貫之

This is a poem included in the Kokin Wakashu, Volume 16, Elegy.

A poem I wrote after my loved one passed away.

This world is a dream
I should have said it
I believed that there was reality in the world

Kino Tsurayuki

This is a poem about how this world is not reality but a dream.

There are many poems that think that dreams and reality both exist.

However, this poem states that there is no such thing as reality, and that the world is just a dream.

The world we thought was real is actually not real.

I like works with this kind of worldview.

There is movie that depict this kind of worldview.
It’s “The Matrix.”

One day, the main character Neo was suddenly told by Morpheus, “The world you live in is not real. You exist in a virtual reality created by programming”.

Neo was confused.
As he interacted with various people, he realized who he was and tried to fulfill his responsibilities (thoughts).

However, it ended up leading to an updated version of the Matrix, which was an ironic result.

On the other hand, Tsurayuki believes that there is no reality in the world, and that reality is just a dream.

The sadness of losing a loved one was too deep.

He lamented that there is no reality in this world, this world is a dream.
